From a family of townspeople ("posadskie liudi"), he was the nephew of Professor Anton Barsov. He studied at Moscow Commercial School and at the University. Master of Philosophy and liberal arts, lecturer. Translator of textbooks in mathematics. Author of many translations, first of all from German, including "Predstavleniia vseobshchei istorii A. Shletsera" ("Presentations of universal history by August Schlözer") (1791, 1809).
