Belonged to a poor noble family. He was educated at home. He served in the army, was a secretary and then a translator in the chancellery of the Governor-General of Prussia Nikolai Korff. He attended lectures in Koenigsberg University. In the 1770s he was the manager of Catherine II's own estates in Kiasovskaya volost. A collegiate assessor. He knew Nikolai Novikov well. He published the first Russian private agricultural journal “Rural Resident” (“Selskii zhitel”), was the editor of “Economical Journal” (“Экономический магазин”). He participated in the meetings of the Free Economic Society (Vol’noe ekonomicheskoe obshchestvo) and was the author of several works, the most popular among them being "The Life and adventures of Andrei Bolotov, described by him for his descendants" (“Zhizn’ i prikliucheniia Andreia Bolotova opisannye samim im dlia svoikh potomkov”) (1870-1873).
